If you have a laptop, you'll probably see "alternate" numbers written on some of your keys, often on the right side of your keyboard, that you have to hold down "Fn", "Function", or some other such key. For examle, on my laptop, I press "Fn" + Alt + "L" (because 3 is the alternate character for the L key), and get a ♥.
